As public defenders around the country face steep workloads and decreasing resources, a new bill introduced by California Senator and presidential candidate Kamala Harris would help boost their funding.

Harris’ bill would give $250 million in federal funds each year to public defender agencies through a grant program, while requiring local and state governments that take the funds to raise the pay and decrease the workload for attorneys defending the indigent.
