Atlanta, GA – Gideon’s Promise is excited to announce its upcoming Summer Institute training for public defenders, scheduled from July 13 to 27, 2024, at the Atlanta Marriott Buckhead Hotel to address the disparities in America’s justice system. This two-week intensive program is a cornerstone of Gideon’s Promise’s mission to ensure full access to justice for thousands of low-income, vulnerable individuals, regardless of income.
The Gideon’s Promise Public Defender’s Summer Institute is designed to build and refine the skills of public defenders, preparing them to advocate fiercely for their clients. Participants will benefit from the expertise of some of the most esteemed instructors in the field, who will provide invaluable insights and practical knowledge.
This event represents the culmination of a 3-year immersion into an intensive public defense curriculum by the graduating class. This year’s class is being especially celebrated for their ability to persevere during the pandemic and the related COVID-19 devastation and highlights the achievements of America’s finest public defenders from across the nation.
Addressing Critical Issues in Criminal Justice Reform
Summer Institute comes at a crucial time as the nation continues to grapple with the ongoing issues of criminal justice reform, mass incarceration, and the systemic injustices highlighted by a study completed by the U.S. Sentencing Commission. According to the report, Black and Brown citizens receive sentences that are 19.1% longer than those of White men for similar crimes. The training provided by Gideon’s Promise is essential in equipping public defenders to challenge these injustices and advocate for fair treatment and due process for all individuals, especially those from marginalized communities.
“Our Summer Institute is more than just a training program; it is a transformative experience that empowers public defenders to be true champions of justice,” said Zanele Ngubeni, Executive Director of Gideons Promise. “I believe that our criminal justice system should not disproportionately penalize low-income individuals simply because they do not possess the wealth to pay a private attorney.”
Challenges in the Justice System
Statistics reveal stark disparities in the justice system. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, approximately 80% of criminal defendants are too poor to afford a lawyer and rely on public defenders. These public defenders often handle overwhelming caseloads, impacting the quality of representation provided. Additionally, low-income individuals who are not able to retain a private attorney due to lack of resources, resulting in harsher sentences and higher rates of incarceration. These challenges underscore the urgent need for well-trained public defenders who can advocate effectively for the rights of marginalized communities.
Call to Support
Gideon’s Promise is calling on supporters and donors to contribute to the success of the national training initiatives for public defenders. Contributions will help cover the costs of several national initiatives for public defender training, hiring exceptional instructors, and advocacy for criminal justice reform. By supporting national training initiatives, supporters will play a direct role in empowering public defenders to fight for justice and equity for all.
