Women’s Thought Panel: Keeping the Promise of Justice Alive for Our Communities

For Gideon’s Promise Week 2021, we presented, Women’s Thought Leadership Panel: Keeping the Promise of Justice Alive for Our Communities hosted by The Gathering Spot. This free, virtual event was moderated by Mo Ivory and featured an all-star panel of Black women leaders across public defense, corporate, and nonprofit spaces. Panelists included, Head of Global Brand Experiences at Ford Motor Company, Rajoielle “Raj” Register; Founder and Chief Executive Office of Why Not Prosper, Rev. Dr. Michelle Anne Simmons; and Assistant Public Defender for Florida’s 10th Judicial Circuit, Andrenette Sullivan.

Future Indigent Defense Leaders Program

The Texas Future Indigent Defense Leaders (FIDL) program is an innovative partnership between Gideon’s Promise, the Harris County Public Defender’s Office, the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA), and the Texas Indigent Defense Commission. This year, 30 lawyers will have the opportunity to be a part of history, as the inaugural Texas FIDL class. This three-year program begins with a two-week CORE 101 new defender training, which will be taught in three segments: the ethics and professionalism of public defense, pretrial practice and trial preparation, and trial advocacy and persuasion. This “boot camp” will be held from April 23rd through May 7th in San Antonio. Special thanks to our national partner, Arnold Ventures, for aiding in the execution of this historic moment.

Winter Training Institute 2021

Gideon’s Promise is delighted to announce that we are hosting our very first, Virtual Winter Institute! This year Winter Institute 2021 will be held virtually from January 22-23, 2021. Summer Institute 2022

Summer Institute is a two-week program that Gideon’s Promise offers to our growing public defender community. This annual program brings together public defenders from all over the country to sharpen their legal skills as they provide support to vulnerable populations. Summer Institute provides training to defenders who are in different stages of their careers.

A Night to Celebrate 2022

Gideon’s Promise will host the 5th annual fundraiser, A Night to Celebrate in New York City! A Night to Celebrate recognizes outstanding individuals in the Greater New York area working to improve the criminal justice system. The awards given out during this ceremony will be the 2022 Ian Yankwitt Equalizer Award, and 2022 Champion of the Community Award. It’s always a pleasure when we get to recognize individuals that are changing the status quo of our criminal legal system!

Gideon’s Promise Leadership Summits are three-day trainings held in July and January of each year. Each Leadership Summit provides a forum for new and experienced Chiefs, Deputy Chiefs, and other key leadership committed to supporting a standard of client-centered representation to collaborate and share best practices.

Summer Session gives us an opportunity for Gideon's Promise “Returners” and Alumni to continue to hone their trial skills. Summer Session provides current CORE 101 members who have completed their initial two-week training and are continuing to matriculate through the CORE 101 training (aka “Returners”) with ongoing training and support. Gideon’s Promise alumni who have completed their CORE 101 program are able to attend follow-up training, based on their needs.

Jazzed for Justice

We are delighted to host a fundraising event for Gideon’s Promise on December 8th, 2022 at 6:30PM. “Jazzed for Justice,” holiday party will be held at the historic Villa Lamar, home of Ed and Judy Garland, longtime supporters and friends of the organization. This event will feature heavy hors d'oeuvres & delicious cocktails all night! Attendees will also enjoy a mini concert performed by renown saxophonist/arranger, Antoine Gibson

For 16 years, Gideon’s Promise has worked tirelessly to transform the criminal legal system. Sadly, their critical work is far from done. Summer Law Clerk

This program is available to law students who have completed at least one year of law school and have shown an interest in pursuing a career in public defense. Participating students will be matched with a public defender in a Gideon’s Promise partner office for a summer, where they will gain valuable exposure to all aspects of effective public defense.
