Stories From the Field: Client-Centered Advocacy Makes a Difference

Today marks the 55th anniversary of the unanimous Gideon v Wainwright Supreme Court decision, which established the right to counsel for indigent people facing criminal charges. While 1963 was a pivotal year for civil and human rights, the movement for equal justice continues today due to financial, structural and cultural changes needed in the criminal justice system. Public defenders are necessary if we are to realize equal justice in America. Gideon’s Promise public defenders are the voices for the voiceless.
